I officially joined the labor force as a full-time employee in 1954, even though I worked part-time during my entire tenure in college. My first full-time job was as a technical writer for Gilfillan Brothers in downtown Los Angeles. From that point on, my professional path proceeded chronologically pretty much as follows:
Wrote and edited technical documentation to military and similar specifications for Gilfillan Brothers, Interstate Electronics, Martin-Marietta and assorted job shops (1954-1963)
Served as news editor/photographer for the Delta County Independent (1964-1967)
Wrote and edited technical hardware documentation for Astrodata (1967-1968)
Served as software technical writer and audio/video script writer/producer for Control Data (1968-1989)
Wrote/edited/produced a video program and workbook on résumé writing that was marketed 1990-1994
As a freelancer, produced brochures, newsletters and résumés for clients (1989-1998)
Developed a membership application program for BPOElks Lodges using Visual Fox Pro (1995-2002)
Drove a school bus and trained other bus drivers for Hanus Bus Company (1992-1998)
Served as sports and feature writer/photographer and page designer for The Willits News (1998-1999)
Officially went freelance again in Y2K
Worked as field assistant & web developer/webmaster for Experience Works, Inc. (2002-2005)
