First American home . .
This picture shows the housewarming party for the white frame farm house built by Georg Schaal, his family and neighbors, sometime around 1898. It replaced a small log dwelling that had served as Georg and Adolphina Schaal's first home in America on Pea Ridge near Potosi, Wisconsin. They raised eleven children on the 80-acre property before turning over the reins to Gustav (the youngest boy) as family farmer. Gustav and Julia Alice raised three children in this house.
How it all started . .
This website chronicles the ancestors and descendants of Georg and Adolphina Schaal from 1550 thru the present. A good place to start tracing family members is to read the article on the Schaal family in Germany and beyond in the Histories section of this website.
Ottilie Schaal Klein of Germany spent years going to the various villages collecting information. She had to have a special stamp from city halls or churches where records were kept. She did not have a car, so she had to walk to many of the villages. Certainly not an easy task. We owe her a belated debt of gratitude.
Many families married into the Schaal family over the years. If your last name is not Schaal, check the Surname section to see if your family is represented.
